Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara – The Faculty of Medicine at the Indonesian Muslim University (FK UMI) has once again demonstrated its commitment to community service through the participation of four FK UMI representatives—two faculty members and two students— in a humanitarian mission organized by the Indonesian Muslim University Medical Assistance Team (TBM) in collaboration with the Association of Medical Doctors of Asia (AMDA) in Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
On Saturday, August 22, 2026, the medical team traveled to the Cibal and West Reok areas, located in the Manggarai mountainous region. The journey to the location took approximately three to four hours over challenging terrain, including winding roads and several sections of damaged road. Nevertheless, these conditions did not dampen the team’s enthusiasm to reach communities still in need of healthcare services.
The involvement of two faculty members and two medical students from UMI played a crucial role in delivering healthcare services in the field. The faculty members played a role in supporting medical services and providing professional guidance, while the students gained hands-on experience in delivering healthcare services and adapting to emergency conditions and limited facilities in the disaster-affected area.
Upon arrival at the location, the team set up healthcare services at the emergency community health center. Based on the results of the activity, 110 residents came directly to receive health checkups, while 10 others received services through home visits because they were unable to come to the service location. Thus, a total of 120 residents received health services from the UMI and AMDA medical teams.
A number of health complaints were identified during the service, including acute respiratory infections (ARI), dermatitis, and sleep disorders or insomnia. The team provided examinations and treatment according to each patient’s condition and needs.
In addition to providing healthcare services, the team also brought relief supplies to support the basic needs of the affected community, including medications, tarps, tents, and blankets. These supplies were part of a humanitarian response to assist residents who still require protection and support in the aftermath of the disaster.
For the UMI School of Medicine, the involvement of faculty and students in this humanitarian mission is a tangible manifestation of medical education that is not only oriented toward academic and clinical competencies but also instills social awareness, empathy, professionalism, and a spirit of service to the community.
The experience of being directly on the ground in the disaster-affected area also served as a valuable learning opportunity for UMI Faculty of Medicine students. The on-site situation provided students with the opportunity to understand how healthcare services can be delivered under limited conditions, while also learning to collaborate with healthcare workers, volunteers, and various parties involved in disaster response.
This initiative also serves as a tangible manifestation of the “Dedicatio Pro Humanitate” spirit that continues to be fostered within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Muslim Indonesia. Medical knowledge is not only applied in lecture halls, laboratories, or hospitals but is also directly brought to communities in need.
Through the participation of four representatives from the UMI Faculty of Medicine in the humanitarian mission in Manggarai, the UMI Faculty of Medicine reaffirms its commitment to producing healthcare professionals who possess competence, professionalism, and a deep concern for the well-being of the community. It is hoped that this spirit of service will continue to grow and become an integral part of the character of every UMI Faculty of Medicine faculty member and student as they work to benefit the community.
