Kuala Simpang — A joint medical team consisting of the Indonesian Muslim University (UMI), the UMI Faculty of Medicine, TBM 110, AMDA, IDAI, AMSA UMI, KBMFK UMI, and Perdatin North Sumatra provided health services to flood-affected residents in Kuala Simpang, Aceh Tamiang Regency, on Sunday (December 7, 2025). The services took place from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. WITA at one of the main relief posts on Jalan Rantau.
The massive floods that struck Aceh Tamiang have affected more than 310,000 residents. Approximately 400,000 hectares of land remain covered in thick mud, hindering recovery efforts and access to healthcare facilities. These conditions have left some residents without access to medical care since the floods began.
During that day’s activities, the team recorded that 74 residents received medical examinations and treatment. The most common complaints were open wounds caused by sharp objects and post-flood trauma. One case that drew particular attention was a 15-year-old patient who arrived in a weakened condition and was diagnosed with appendicitis. The patient received initial treatment before being prepared for referral, as the Aceh Tamiang Regional General Hospital remains inoperable due to being submerged in mud.
Access to the relief post location remains difficult. Electricity has not yet been restored, clean water is limited, and several routes remain cut off. Staff found a number of residents with untreated infected wounds. A team from H. Adam Malik General Hospital is currently preparing plans to set up a field hospital to strengthen healthcare services in the affected area.
Medical teams noted that several urgent needs remain, including drinking water, ready-to-eat meals, blankets, clothing, wound care supplies, sterilization equipment, as well as antibiotics and antipyretics.
These healthcare efforts are part of a cross-agency initiative to accelerate the recovery of the Aceh Tamiang community following the massive floods that crippled much of the region’s infrastructure.
