Makassar, June 14, 2025 — The evening took on a magical atmosphere as the UMI Faculty of Medicine presented the Cultural Night for the 22nd AFKSI National Congress 2025, featuring the captivating traditional customs of the Kajang tribe. Held at The Rinra Hotel in Makassar, all participants from across Indonesia were immersed in the cultural atmosphere of South Sulawesi—all in black, rich in meaning, and full of charisma.
The chosen theme was more than just a symbol—the identity of the Kajang people of Bulukumba was selected as a reflection of noble values relevant to the medical world: honesty, integrity, and simplicity. The black attire worn by all participants served as a symbol of moral strength, as if to emphasize that the medical world is not just about science, but also about the heart and character.
The passapu—a traditional Makassar headdress worn by the male participants—further underscored their pride in a local cultural heritage rich in meaning. Clad in traditional attire, this forum not only celebrated cultural diversity but also strengthened the spirit of unity under a single vision: advancing private medical education in Indonesia.
In his remarks, UMI Rector Prof. Dr. H. Hambali Thalib, MH, described the event as a symbol of inclusivity and a spirit of collaboration in facing global challenges in the healthcare sector. He also expressed appreciation for the 33-year journey of the UMI Faculty of Medicine, which has continuously transformed into a high-quality, religiously grounded, and socially responsible medical education institution.
“For more than three decades, the UMI Faculty of Medicine has not only produced doctors who are academically competent but also possess a humanitarian spirit, uphold integrity, and embody Islamic values in every step they take,” he said.
Furthermore, Prof. Hambali announced UMI’s Faculty of Medicine’s preparations for “Excellent” accreditation, as a demonstration of its full commitment to high educational standards and global competitiveness.
This cultural evening was made even more special by the election of Dr. dr. Nasruddin A. Mappaware as Chair of the AFKSI Executive Board for the 2025–2028 term. The UMI Rector described this as a source of pride and a strategic milestone for UMI to make a greater contribution to the development of the national medical field.
The South Sulawesi Provincial Government, through the Head of the Health Office, Dr. Iskandar, M.Kes., also expressed its highest appreciation for UMI’s success in hosting the event and for the election of the Dean of the UMI Faculty of Medicine as the leader of AFKSI. “This is not only a source of pride for UMI, but also for the people of South Sulawesi,” he emphasized.
Closing the series of events, Dr. Nasruddin expressed his gratitude for the smooth execution of all agenda items. He emphasized the importance of synergy across institutions and among individuals in driving progress in the health sector. “We support one another for a healthier Indonesia. And tomorrow morning, we’ll wrap things up with a group exercise—as a symbol of fitness, togetherness, and renewed spirit,” he concluded.
