Makassar – In an atmosphere of reflection and a spirit of reform, the Faculty of Medicine at the Indonesian Muslim University (FK UMI) held a Joint Self-Reflection event as a gesture of concern and solidarity in response to the various challenges currently facing medical education in Indonesia. The event took place on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the Teleconference Auditorium on the 5th floor of FK UMI.

The Dean of FK UMI, Dr. dr. H. Nasrudin A. Mappaware, Sp.OG(K), M.Kes., M.Sc., FISQua, was present to lead the event and called on the entire academic community to engage in muhasabah—or self-reflection—as a first step toward reforming the medical education system based on Islamic values.

“Before pointing fingers outward, let’s look inward. Muhasabah means bringing everything back to ourselves. Have we fulfilled our duties in accordance with religious guidance, professional ethics, and social responsibility?” he stated in his opening remarks.

According to him, as part of an educational institution grounded in Islamic values, the UMI Faculty of Medicine bears a significant moral and spiritual responsibility to set an example. He emphasized that the campus is not merely a place to study medical science but also serves as a venue for Islamic outreach and character education rooted in Islam.

“The UMI Faculty of Medicine is a campus of da’wah. Everything we do—from the leadership down to the students—should be rooted in religious values. This is not just about curing diseases, but also about shaping individuals who are morally and intellectually sound,” he added.

This muhasabah session was not only a time for reflection but also included a joint prayer asking for Allah SWT’s best protection for the entire medical academic community in Indonesia. The participants collectively expressed their hope that teachers, doctors, and students would be granted the strength to face the various challenges and ever-evolving dynamics of the medical world.

The atmosphere in the room was solemn and deeply moving, creating a space for profound contemplation. The students appeared deeply absorbed in prayer; some bowed their heads, while others wept silently—a moment that united their feelings in a spirit of self-improvement and hope.

The event was attended by the Dean of the UMI Faculty of Medicine, Dr. dr. H. Nasrudin A. Mappaware, Sp.OG(K), M.Kes., M.Sc., FISQua; the First Vice Dean of the UMI Faculty of Medicine, Dr. dr. Ida Royani, M.Kes; MHPE; the Second Associate Dean of the UMI Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Shulhana Mokhtar, M.Med.Ed.; the Third Associate Dean of the UMI Faculty of Medicine, Dr. dr. Armanto Makmun, M.Kes., FISQua., FISPH., FISCM., AIFO-K; the 4th Vice Dean of the UMI Faculty of Medicine, Dr. dr. Rachmat Faisal Syamsu, M.Kes, CIP, FISPH, FISCM; as well as the faculty members and students of the UMI Faculty of Medicine who were actively involved throughout the event.

“Let’s make this moment a turning point. Better medical education begins with a pure heart and sincere intentions. This is our moment of self-reflection,” concluded the Dean, a call that was met with nods of agreement and resolve from the entire audience.
