Makassar – The Faculty of Medicine at the Indonesian Muslim University (FK UMI) played an active role in the free health services and HIV-TB screening event organized by the Indonesian Muslim University at the Departure Terminal of Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport on August 20–21, 2026. This event was part of a series of activities commemorating the 81st anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia and served as a tangible demonstration of UMI’s commitment to serving the community.
During the event, a team from the UMI Faculty of Medicine was directly involved in providing health services to the public. The services available included blood pressure checks, height and weight measurements, waist circumference measurements, blood sugar tests, cholesterol tests, and uric acid tests. In addition to basic health screenings, the public also had access to HIV and tuberculosis (TB) screenings as part of efforts to detect various health risk factors early.
The health service event also included medical treatment and physical therapy, ensuring that community members not only received initial screenings but could also receive follow-up care based on their health conditions. The provision of these services represents a promotive and preventive approach aimed at encouraging the community to take greater care of their health.
The Head of the UMI Faculty of Medicine Team, Dr. Abdul Mubdi, stated that screening activities play a crucial role in supporting early detection. According to him, health checkups should not only be conducted when a person is already experiencing symptoms but should also be performed regularly to identify health conditions and risk factors at an early stage.
For the UMI Faculty of Medicine, participation in this activity serves as a form of community service while also applying medical knowledge directly within the community. Through health services and screening activities, both faculty members and healthcare staff at the UMI Faculty of Medicine can help raise public awareness about the importance of routine health checkups.
These activities also align with the spirit of the “Impactful Campus” initiative, where the competencies and academic expertise of higher education institutions are directed toward providing direct benefits to the community. The UMI Faculty of Medicine continues to encourage its academic community not only to develop competencies in educational and clinical settings but also to take an active role in various community-based health initiatives.
Providing health services in public spaces such as Sultan Hasanuddin Airport is also a strategic step toward bringing health screenings closer to the community. By capitalizing on the momentum of Independence Day celebrations, this initiative simultaneously encourages the public to reflect on the meaning of independence through compassion, collaboration, and meaningful actions that deliver tangible benefits.
Through the involvement of the UMI Faculty of Medicine team in this activity, the UMI Faculty of Medicine reaffirms its commitment to continuing to contribute to improving the public’s health. This spirit is part of the UMI Faculty of Medicine’s efforts to develop medical professionals who are not only outstanding in academic and clinical competence but also possess social awareness and a spirit of service to the community.
