Hiroshima, Japan – Wednesday, February 20, 2025, the Faculty of Medicine at the Indonesian Muslim University (FK UMI) in Makassar visited the Faculty of Medicine at Hiroshima University for several events. First, they attended an international lecture delivered by Prof. Shingo Fukuma, MD, Ph.D., a professor from the Department of Epidemiology, Infectious Disease Control and Prevention at Hiroshima University in Japan. This event took place at the Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Hiroshima University in Japan.
During the event, the FK UMI delegation was led directly by the Dean of the UMI Faculty of Medicine, Dr. dr. Nasrudin A.M., Sp.OG, Subsp.Obginsos, MARS, M.Sc., FISQua, AIFO-K, accompanied by Vice Dean II, Dr. Shulhana Mokhtar, M.Med.Ed; Vice Dean III, Dr. dr. Armanto Makmun, M.Kes., FISQua, FISPH.,FISCM., AIFO-K, the Head of the Medical Professional Program, Dr. dr. Shofiyah Latief, SpRad (K)-PRP, M.Kes, MHPE, as well as several other UMI Faculty of Medicine lecturers, namely dr. Berry Erida Hasbi, Sp.B, dr. Utomo Andi P, Ph.D., and Dr. Dian Fahmi Utami, M.Biomed (a UMI Faculty of Medicine faculty member currently pursuing a Ph.D. program at Hiroshima University) In addition, this event was also attended by 11 student delegates from the UMI Faculty of Medicine who participated in the discussion session.
During this international lecture, the main topic of discussion was Japan’s preventive measures, models, and strategies for addressing diseases in the community based on available epidemiological data.
As part of this international collaboration, other agenda items besides the International Lecture included strategic discussions regarding human resource development for UMI Faculty of Medicine faculty members (Ph.D. studies), as well as research collaboration and international publications between the UMI Faculty of Medicine and Hiroshima University. Another item on the agenda was the planning of a clinical rotation/residency program for students in the Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) Specialization Program at UMI’s Faculty of Medicine at Hiroshima University. This initiative is expected to serve as a bridge to strengthen the quality of clinical education for UMI medical students at the international level.
On this occasion, the leadership of the UMI Faculty of Medicine also invited professors from Hiroshima University to serve as speakers at the International Conference to be held in June 2025, which is part of the series of events celebrating the 33rd anniversary of the UMI Faculty of Medicine. At the event, Prof. Shingo Fukuma is expected to deliver a lecture on the importance of preventive medicine and epidemiological research in efforts to control infectious diseases.
The Dean of the UMI Faculty of Medicine, Dr. dr. Nasrudin A.M., Sp.OG, Subsp.Obginsos, MARS, M.Sc., FISQua, AIFO-K, expressed his deep appreciation for the warm welcome and support from Hiroshima University, particularly to Prof. Shingo Fukuma. He hopes the outcomes of this meeting will strengthen bilateral relations between the institutions and make a significant contribution to improving the quality of medical education at the UMI Faculty of Medicine.

This is a strategic step toward elevating the quality of education and research at the UMI Faculty of Medicine to an international level,” stated Dr. dr. The event concluded with a group photo session between the UMI Faculty of Medicine delegation and Prof. Shingo Fukuma and his team from Hiroshima University, symbolizing their shared commitment to continue strengthening cooperation in the fields of education, research, and academic development in the future. There was also a ceremony to present a plaque and a traditional Makassar souvenir—a miniature phinisi ship—which was presented directly by the Dean of the UMI Faculty of Medicine to Prof. Shingo Fukuma.
