The Islamic Student Association (HMI) Medical Branch at the Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) once again reaffirmed its commitment to serving the community through the 2024 HMI Wajo Social Service Event. Held at the Majauleng Subdistrict Office in Wajo Regency, South Sulawesi, on Saturday, November 30, 2024, the event carried the theme “Transforming HMI’s Commitment Through Community Service Programs for a Just and Prosperous Society.”
The event involved collaboration among medical students, general practitioners, specialists, and various relevant parties, who together provided tangible benefits to hundreds of community members. The focus was not only on medical services but also on health education and social solidarity to improve the well-being of communities in remote areas.
Preparations for the event began on Thursday, November 28, 2024, with the departure of an advance team to the location to ensure all technical requirements were met. On Friday evening, the main group—comprising students and medical personnel—arrived in Majauleng Subdistrict, bringing a spirit of unity to carry out the event to the fullest.
The highlight of the event began Saturday morning with the official opening ceremony in the courtyard of the Majauleng Subdistrict Office. The event was opened by the Chair of the Organizing Committee, Abulkhairil Jam’an Laoh, alongside the General Chair of the HMI UMI Medical Branch, Muh. Muflih Usman Musa. Warm remarks were also delivered by the Dean of the UMI Faculty of Medicine, Dr. dr. H. Nasrudin AM, SpOG(K), as well as Assistant I of the Wajo Regency Government, Ir. Andi Musdalifah Z, M.Si., who represented the Acting Regent of Wajo in officially opening the event.
Mass Circumcision: A total of 35 children received safe and comfortable medical care, leaving smiles of joy on their faces and those of their families. Health Checkups: More than 103 residents received medical services at various clinics, including the General Clinic, Dermatology Clinic, and Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic, to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining good health. Health Education: Focusing on the topic “Prevention of the Top 5 Diseases in Majauleng Subdistrict”—such as diabetes mellitus, acute respiratory infections (ARI), tuberculosis (TB), dyspepsia, and hypertension—52 participants gained practical insights on how to prevent these diseases. The material was presented by medical students from the Student Executive Board’s Community Service Division, providing hands-on, practical education for the community.
This event served not only as an opportunity to provide healthcare services but also had a profound educational impact. Attendees felt physically supported and gained valuable insights to protect their families from the threat of disease.
The event concluded with an evaluation and the sterilization of medical equipment, followed by a communal dinner as a symbol of the strong solidarity between the organizing committee and the community. The Chair of the Organizing Committee, Abulkhairil Jam’an Laoh, expressed his hope: “We are grateful that this event went smoothly and left a positive legacy for both the community and HMI. May we be able to help even more people in the future. Where the art of healing is cherished, there too is a celebration of love for humanity.”
With a spirit of sincere dedication, the HMI Wajo 2024 Social Service event successfully strengthened the role of medical students as agents of social change, bringing humanistic values to life within communities in need.
