The Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) has received approval to launch an Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) program. This authorization was formalized through the presentation of a Decree from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology by Dr. Andi Lukman, Head of the Regional Office for Higher Education (LLDikti) Region IX, to UMI leadership in Makassar on August 12, 2024.
This authorization was granted after UMI successfully passed the site visit process and met all the established requirements. According to Dr. dr. H. Nasrudin Andi Mappaware, Dean of the UMI Faculty of Medicine, their institution has become the first private university to offer an OB/GYN program and the 18th university nationwide to do so.
Dr. Nasrudin emphasized that this program aims not only to produce medical specialists but also to contribute to efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality rates in Indonesia. UMI plans to open enrollment for new students in this program shortly.
Prof. Sufirman Rahman, Rector of UMI, added that this program is a response to the shortage of OB/GYN doctors in Indonesia, which has contributed to high maternal and child mortality rates. He expressed UMI’s commitment to implementing this program to the best of its ability.
Dr. Andi Lukman from LLDikti Region IX commended UMI for this achievement, highlighting the efforts and benefits this program will provide to the community, educational institutions, and the foundation.
