Ramadan is a month that’s too precious to let slip by unnoticed. The Prominens Class of ’98 from the UMI Faculty of Medicine has a regular program every holy month of Ramadan: sharing happiness with those in need. This year, the mandatory program for the extended Prominens family at the University of Muslim Indonesia’s Faculty of Medicine—which focuses on sharing with others—is centered on children with cancer. Prominens ’98 from the UMI Faculty of Medicine visited a shelter for children with cancer and their parents who are undergoing treatment in Makassar. This was announced by the Chair of the Prominens Class of the UMI Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Wachyudi Muchsin, SH, MKes, on Thursday, April 21, 2022.According to data from the Chair of the 2022 Ramadan Sharing Committee, Dr. dr. Shofiya Latief, Sp.Rad., MKes, there are currently 14 children with cancer at the shelter, which is supported by the Indonesian Children’s Cancer Care Foundation (YKAKI). Meanwhile, there are 17 parents of patients and 6 staff members. “We are providing assistance funded by donations from the Prominens 98 family of the UMI Faculty of Medicine. Although it is modest, we hope it will be of benefit. This is not merely a donation but a commitment on our part to provide support to the patients, their families, and the staff. So that children with cancer can receive the best possible healthcare and hold onto the hope of recovery,” concluded Dr. Yudi. Dr. Rima Frisandi, Sp.THT., M.Kes., and Dr. Eka Yusuf Inra Kartika, Sp.A., M.Kes., could not hold back their emotions while interacting with the cancer patients and their parents. According to the foundation’s administrators, the most common types of cancer among patients are leukemia (blood cancer), followed by retinoblastoma (eye cancer), neuroblastoma (nerve cancer), and finally nephroblastoma (kidney cancer). All of them are staying at the YKAKI shelter. “They are all incredibly resilient and patient in facing this terrifying disease. They offer many life lessons for all of us,” emphasized Dr. Yudi. Prominens’ commitment was welcomed by the chairperson of the UMI Faculty of Medicine Alumni Association (IKA), Dr. dr. Hj. Muji Iswanty, SH., SpKK., MH., M.Kes, who was also present at the event. Dr. Muji stated that she would coordinate with the entire UMI Medical Faculty team to jointly support this noble mission. “Whether through community service in the form of routine health checkups, sharing knowledge, storytelling, or donating funds to help ease the suffering of our children with cancer,” said Dr. Muji.
